Vishaka Vidyalaya of Badulla was the first girls school to be established in Uva province. It was started in 1892 with the pre-eminence of Madam Kotten as a missionary school. At the beginning , this school was governed by Methodist missionaries as a part of missionary chapel. It contained only one building at the beginning.
With the pre-eminence of Mr. Blaze and Mr. Pinto it was started and Mr. S.A.Peris and Mr. B.D.P. Wijewardane assisted to establish it. At the beginning , there were only 50 students and they were the members of Methodist and Lanka Sabha. This High School of Badulla was established as a private school , learning process in English medium , providing accomadation and other facilities for students who membered as Christians.
Principals from 1892 to 1960 were foreigners. When developing the school step by step from grade 1 , V.P. Nallathambi was the first student who passed the Cambridge examination in 1928. At present also , we would be able to see the examination displayed on the main hall. At the beginning of 1962 , there were both girls and boys in this school , with the rapid increase of student the school management had to stop recruiting the boys providing the chance only for girls.
Until 1963 both girls and boys studied in grade 1 and 2. But from grade 3 boys had to go another school. The learning process was done in English medium from 1892 to 1956. But the government ordered to teach all the subjects in Sinhala medium after Sinhala language became the national language in Sri Lanka. From 1892 to 1956 teaching Buddhism was restricted. Instead of that , they introduced a new subject , General knowledge for the students who are not Christians. Day by day the number of students were increased and the buildings provided are not specious for their demands. With the help of school management community , the madam , principal Ruth Allen constructed a new building in 1950. It was opened in 1952 , after 1963 this school was established as a school governing by the government. It is promoted Girls’ High School to Vishaka Girls’ High School.
